Newsletter 2009/2010

Membership was similar to last year.  After 27 years with the annual fee at £2, in 2010 it will increase to £5.  We hope you will still find GYA good value for money.

There was a good response to our spring seminar with Dawn Baillie of the Inner Yoga trust.  We tried running a summer seminar in June, and we were fortunate to have Ruth Gilmore, who gave us a most informative day on Yoga and Stress.  However, attendance was not good.  Unfortunately, our autumn seminar (Shakti Dance) had to be cancelled for reasons beyond our control.  So overall, we made a loss on seminars, and may need to put up the charges next year.

Our summer classes in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire began at the end of June.  The 16 tutors covered 18 classes, providing interesting and varied classes throughout the summer.  Once the school holidays had started, numbers in Aberdeen were good.  In the Shire, owing to the generosity of the tutors, attendance was sufficient to cover the costs.  We are extremely grateful to the all tutors who gave their expertise and time in exchange for modest fees, or in some cases (at the suggestion of tutors) reduced fees or even no fees at all.

The Association offers a grant of £100 to members doing the Yoga Scotland teacher-training Diploma and a grant of £50 to members doing the Foundation Course.  Moira Donald and Arlene Fraser are being sponsored on the Diploma course.  So far, no Foundation students have come forward for sponsorship.

As well as word-of-mouth, posters and the press, we continue to use email and our website to broadcast information about seminars, teachers and classes, and in these ways we are reaching a broad audience both within and outside Grampian.

Looking to 2010, over the weekend of 17th and 18th April, GYA and the Kathy Julius Yoga Trust have together organised a seminar with Swami Pragyamurti Saraswati, Director of the Satyananda Yoga Centre.  Her intriguing title is “Off the yoga mat and into life”.  The seminar is at Woodend Barn, Burn o’Bennie, Banchory, from 10 am to 4 pm.  Book early via the KJYT website www.yogaaberdeen.org to get a place.

Summer classes will start in Aberdeen on Tuesday 29th June.  The autumn seminar is with Sue MacLennan, Yoga Scotland Tutor, on Saturday 30th October.

All members are cordially invited to the Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 9th March at 10.30 at 8 Bon Accord Square, Aberdeen.  We will be pleased to receive any suggestions for development or improvement.
